Annuals vs. Perennials

A display of multicolor pansies.

Annuals like petunias, marigolds and sunflowers go through their entire life cycle in one growing season and need to be replanted every year. Their continuous bloom throughout the season creates a bright and showy choice for borders, beds and containers.

Perennials return season after season, going dormant in the winter and producing new growth in the spring. Although their blooming periods are shorter, perennials like hydrangeas and black-eyed Susans are garden favorites.

These codes can be found on the plant tags of live goods sold at Lowe’s and help identify which plants and flowers can grow side by side, based on sunlight and water requirements. Plants sharing the same number grow well together.

Hardiness Zones

Where you live affects how your plants will grow. Cold hardiness zones — zones based on the average lowest temperature in your area of the country — help determine which plants will flourish in your landscape. Shopping the right cold hardiness zone for where you’re planting ensures your flowers and plants will thrive.

Enjoy a Beautiful Garden

Beyond enjoying the beautiful blooms, gardening can improve your health and mood. Whether you need to bring your landscaping ideas to life, overhaul an entire outdoor space or simply bask in fragrant flowers indoors, there’s a generous selection of plants and gardening tools in the Lowe’s Garden Center to help with your garden inspiration.

Outdoor Plants

Grow annual and perennial plants in plant nurseries, window boxes and deck containers to maximize garden area. When you need structure, go for perennial plants because they grow in the same location year after year.

Outdoor plants may require more water, but exotic house plants require a different kind of care. Ensure your home meets the minimum lighting requirement for growth, before buying your next houseplant. If you don't have good windows, air plants and snake plants are great house guests that do well in low-light areas. Plus, they’re tough enough to do without the occasional watering. Check out our guide — Care for Houseplants — for more indoor gardening tips.

Beginner-Friendly Information

We’re also beginner friendly. Not sure how to identify what plants go together? Our plant shop offers Grow Together codes to help identify flowers and plants that do well in pairs or groups. These codes come in different numbers and colors. Plants with the same number tag go well in pairs, and the different color tags tell you how much light or water your plant needs.
