Using color, paint and home décor pieces, we’ll show you two dramatic ways to decorate a living room, while also providing budget-friendly styling tips.

Laminate Flooring

First, let’s start at ground level. We wanted flooring that was stylish and affordable. And we found it in this water-resistant laminate flooring by Allen + Roth®.

We used an oak-look finish as the foundation for this light and bright living room.

Lighting and Home Décor

Next, we’ll focus on the lighting. A handwoven rope pendant sets the tone for a boho-chic look.

Now it’s time to outfit the room with some stylish furniture and accessories. We’ve used a comfy cream sofa and oak-caned chairs as the foundation pieces. The curtains, top rug and throw pillows pull the yellow from the ceiling and give the room a bright boho feel.

Layering different textures is important when decorating. The jute rug, rope pendant and wicker baskets are softened by the cream pouf, velvet pillows and brass accents.

Choose the right lighting for your home.

It’s amazing what a can of paint can do — and in an unexpected place, no less.

The ceiling is known as the fifth wall, and painting it with this striking yellow called Cadence from HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams brings the wow factor.

When you go this bold on a ceiling, it’s best to keep the other four walls more muted. A light taupe is a nice complement and allows the white bookcases and fireplace to stand out.

Vinyl Plank Flooring

If you prefer a darker, more masculine feel, then consider our second look.

Starting with the flooring, we selected a luxury vinyl plank in a cool gray tone. This type of flooring is ideal with kids and pets because it’s waterproof. An easy click install system is the perfect project for DIYers.

Lighting and Furnishings

A living room with silver lighting, a gray velvet sofa, dark blue-green walls, and black windows.

Next, we look to lighting. A futuristic chandelier is sleek and modern, while polished nickel sconces over the bookcases shine brightly in this rich, moody space.

Then we added a gray velvet couch and modern armchairs with metallic pillows and blankets to add luxury and sparkle.

Good to Know

Light colors make a room feel bigger. Dark-colored walls make a room feel cozier.

Finally, let’s talk about this beautiful paint color. The deep green is called Dark Night by Sherwin Williams. In a large space like this, it gives the room a warm and cozy vibe.

For extra texture and dimension, we lined the bookcases with a grass-cloth wallpaper in a similar color.

Rugs and Accessories

An area rug is a great foundation piece that can define a space. In the yellow living room, we used a jute rug to provide texture and layered a colorful Oriental rug on top to pull the yellow in from the ceiling and curtains. In the dark green living room, we used a soft gray rug that’s a neutral foundation against the dark gray furniture. When selecting an area rug, size is important. Ideally, your furniture should fit comfortably on top of the rug. If that’s not feasible, then have the front legs of every piece of furniture on top of the rug.

If you’re looking for a light refresh instead of a complete makeover, there are a few easy and affordable changes you can make to your existing décor.

Paint will definitely give you the most bang for your buck and can easily transform a living room. A modern chandelier and some colorful throw pillows and blankets are budget-friendly additions to instantly update and personalize your space.
